The latest data on the cultural and tourism market shows that rural leisure tourism is experiencing unprecedented development opportunities. According to the "2023 China Rural Tourism Development Index Report" released by the China Tourism Academy, the number of rural tourism visitors in the first half of this year has reached 1.5 billion, an increase of 25% year-on-year, and has recovered to 118% of the level in the same period of 2019. This figure is significantly higher than the overall recovery level of the tourism industry, demonstrating the strong resilience of rural cultural and tourism.
91%In terms of consumption characteristics, the per capita consumption of rural tourism reached 850 yuan in 2023, an increase of 40% compared with 2020. Among them, the proportion of experiential consumption rose from 20% in the past to 35%. The structure of tourists has also undergone significant changes. People born in the 1980s and 1990s have become the main consumers, accounting for 62%. Family and parent-child trips (45%) and micro-vacations among young people (30%) have become the two core customer groups. The market is showing three major trends: The first is experientization, shifting from "enjoying the scenery" to "in-depth experience"; Second, the demand for personalized, niche and customized products is on the rise. Third, digitalization has made smart tourism services a standard feature. These changes provide a clear direction for rural cultural and tourism projects to enhance the quality of leisure and innovate business forms.
1. Enhance leisure quality: Create immersive rural experience SpacesTo enhance the leisure nature of rural cultural tourism, it is necessary to fundamentally change the traditional "cursory" model and create leisure Spaces that allow tourists to slow down, deeply experience and repeatedly consume.
In terms of environmental creation, we should abandon the overly commercialized and urbanized development approach and preserve the original ecological foundation and cultural texture of the countryside. The successful experience of Moganshan in Zhejiang Province shows that maintaining the authenticity of the rural landscape is more likely to attract high-end tourists than building new ancient-style buildings. Data shows that projects with authentic rural environments have a 35% higher visitor satisfaction rate and a 40% higher repeat visit rate. In terms of time rhythm design, it is necessary to change the one-day tour mode and extend the stay time through night tour projects and immersive experiences. Data from 2023 shows that the spending of overnight tourists is 3.2 times that of one-day tourists. Therefore, developing the night economy has become the key to enhancing the quality of leisure. The "Starry Sky Camping +" project in Yongtai County, Fujian Province, has increased the overnight rate to 60% and the per capita consumption by 200% through a combination of stargazing, night chats and candlelight dinners. Upgrading the service system is the guarantee for enhancing the quality of leisure. Digital services such as full WiFi coverage, intelligent navigation, and online reservations have become basic demands. The 2023 rural tourism research shows that the approval rate of projects with well-developed digital services is 28 percentage points higher than that of traditional projects. At the same time, humanized services are also indispensable. Details such as parent-child convenience facilities and pet-friendly services can significantly enhance the leisure experience.
Ii. Innovation in Experience Formats: Five product Systems Activate Consumption Potential. Based on changes in consumer demand, the following five types of experience formats can effectively stimulate the consumption potential in rural areas:
Agricultural culture Experience category: Immersive agricultural Experience: It's not just about simple picking, but offers full-cycle participation opportunities from planting to harvest. The "Rice Field Adoption" project on Chongming Island, Shanghai, enables urban families to remotely adopt a rice field, observe its growth through an App, and regularly participate in agricultural activities. The annual consumption per family can reach 3,000 to 5,000 yuan. Agricultural product processing experience: DIY tofu making, wine-making experience, pastry making, etc., transforming agricultural products into experience projects. Data shows that the proportion of secondary consumption in farms with processing experiences has reached 65%, which is 40% higher than that of simple picking.
Intangible Cultural Heritage Handicraft Experience category: Traditional Handicraft Workshops: Invite intangible cultural heritage inheritors to offer short-term courses such as indigo dyeing, pottery, and bamboo weaving. The woodcarving workshops in Dongyang, Zhejiang Province, charge 800 to 1,500 yuan per person for weekend courses, but they are still in high demand. Folk culture experience: Develop in-depth experience products in combination with festivals, such as making zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and other seasonal activities. Such activities not only attract tourists but also boost the sales of agricultural products, with a comprehensive income that is over 50% higher than that of ordinary festivals.
Nature education Experience category: Ecological research and study courses: Develop nature observation and ecological protection courses for parent-child families. The "Forest School" project at Beijing Shanye Amusement Park charges 498 yuan per child for daily classes, and the summer classes are as high as 3,800 yuan per week. The reservation schedule has reached three months. Outdoor adventure experience: Develop hiking, tree climbing and rafting projects suitable for different age groups. Data shows that the average transaction value of high-quality outdoor experience projects is 2 to 3 times that of ordinary sightseeing projects.
Iii. Business Model Innovation: Construction of Diversified Revenue Channels. The traditional ticket economy is no longer capable of supporting the sustainable development of rural cultural tourism. It is necessary to build diversified business models
"Basic Experience + In-depth Service" model: Offer free or low-cost basic park entry experiences, and achieve profits through in-depth experience projects and professional guidance services. The "free admission + paid projects" model of Chengdu Xingfu Meilin has enabled secondary consumption to account for 70% of the total revenue, which is much higher than the traditional ticket model.
Membership system and subscription system: Develop annual members to offer priority reservations, exclusive activities and other benefits. The Tianyuan Dongfang project in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, offers a family annual fee of 2,980 yuan. It provides 12 free entries, 4 exclusive activities and agricultural product delivery services. It has developed over 2,000 members and has formed a stable source of income.
Joint operation model and commission model: Cooperate with local farmers and artisans, provide venues and management, and share the income. This model reduces the initial investment while stimulating the enthusiasm of local participation. The beautiful countryside project in Tonglu, Zhejiang Province, has introduced over 50 business formats through a 30% commission model, generating an annual revenue share of more than 8 million yuan.
The industrial chain extension model: extending upstream to the cultivation and processing of agricultural products, and downstream to the development of cultural and creative products. A typical case of Beijing Hawthorn Courtyard: growing hawthorn (primary industry)- processing hawthorn food (secondary industry)- hawthorn making experience + hawthorn cultural and creative products (tertiary industry), forming a three-industry integration model, the average value per customer has increased fivefold.
The success of rural leisure and cultural tourism projects cannot be achieved without three key elements: in-depth cultural cultivation, innovative business models and community participation. It is necessary to deeply explore the cultural characteristics of local areas to avoid homogeneous competition. Continuously innovate the experience business format to maintain the project's appeal; Encourage local community participation to ensure sustainable development. In terms of the implementation path, it is recommended to adopt the strategy of "pilot - iteration - expansion" : first, create core experience projects to test the market, quickly iterate and optimize based on feedback, and then gradually expand the scale after the model matures. At the same time, we should pay attention to the application of digital tools, understand the needs of tourists through data, and precisely adjust products and services. In the future, rural leisure and cultural tourism will pay more attention to emotional connection and the transmission of lifestyle. Successful projects will not only be tourist destinations but also Windows showcasing the lifestyle that urban people yearn for. By integrating in-depth experience of business formats and innovative business models, rural cultural tourism will unleash greater consumption potential and achieve a dual improvement in economic and social benefits.
